Cleaning Products Every Household in Uganda Should Have
What’s the one thing you never want to lack in your house? If you ask me, I will say food, water, a mattress, a blanket—and cleaning products. I know many might not think of cleaning products immediately, and that’s not because people don’t care about cleanliness—it’s just that it often comes as an afterthought. But living in a clean home should be at the top of everyone’s agenda, especially in Uganda, where dust, germs, and smells can take over quickly if left unchecked.
Here are the essential cleaning products
every Ugandan household should have:
1. Bathroom Cleaners
Let’s start with the bathroom—the one place that should always feel fresh and
safe. A quality toilet bowl cleaner is a must. It helps remove stains,
kill germs, and leave your toilet smelling fresh. You also need a disinfectant
of your choice for wiping surfaces like sinks, taps, and door handles. Pair
this with a scrubbing brush and gloves, and your bathroom will remain hygienic.
2. Kitchen Cleaning Essentials
Your kitchen is where food is prepared, so hygiene is non-negotiable. Keep a multi-surface
kitchen cleaner or degreaser on hand to handle cooking oils and food
spills. Dishwashing liquid is also crucial—choose one that’s tough on
grease but gentle on your hands. For extra protection, use a surface
disinfectant spray or wipes for countertops, especially after handling raw
meat or fish.
3. Floor Cleaners
Whether you have cement, tile, or terrazzo floors, dirt and dust settle fast in
our climate. A good liquid floor cleaner, preferably with a pleasant
scent, can lift dirt while leaving your home smelling clean. Don’t forget a
sturdy mop, bucket, and broom—you’d be surprised how many
people stock cleaners but ignore the tools to apply them!
4. Laundry Products
Keeping your clothes clean is not just about looking smart—it’s also about hygiene. Invest in a trusted powder or liquid detergent, of your choice depending on your budget and fabric type. For those who want an extra level of cleanliness, a fabric softener or disinfectant can be added during rinsing to kill germs and soften clothes.
5. Odour Neutralisers
Ugandan homes, especially in Kampala and other urban areas, can suffer from
unwanted smells due to cooking, dust, or poor ventilation. A simple air
freshener or odour neutraliser can do wonders. For a natural option,
burn incense sticks or place bowls of vinegar or baking soda in corners
to absorb smells.
Baking soda and vinegar should never
miss in a home. They help with bad odour and also work as stain removers.
